Dinosaur Canvas Pair
Materials Needed:
3 sheets each dinosaur head & tail paper (available at our Monroe location)
2 - 12" x 12" canvases
Matte Mod-Podge
1 package of 3D foam dots
Delta acrylic paints (we used Delta Ceramcoat Paint Pot Palettes in the Vintage Colors)
1" paint brush
1/4" paint brush
Dimond Glaze (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Work with 1 canvas at a time for this step. Lay the canvas side up. Trim away the labeled edge on all scrapbook papers if necessary.
- Apply a moderate layer of Mod-Podge to the wrong side of the Dinosaur paper using a 1" brush.
- Coat the front of the canvas with a moderate layer of Mod-Podge using a 1" brush.
- Making sure to line the edges up squarely, place the dinosaur paper, glue side down, on the canvas. (Don't worry about the sides of the canvas at this point, you will paint them later). Gently smooth the paper with your hand to marry the two surfaces and reduce bubbling. (It may be necessary to add a little extra Mod-Podge along the very edges of the paper to get them to stick flush to the canvas.)
Since a little bubbling of the surface may occur at this point, you may choose to lay the papered canvas face down on a clean, smooth surface and use books to weigh it down to press out the bubbles. This only works well while the Mod-Podge is still damp.
2. Repeat step 1 for the other canvas and hind-end dinosaur paper.
3. While the canvases are drying, you can cut the necessary images from the remaining papers. From one head page, cut the dinosaur and the bushes. From the other head page, cut just the dinosaurs full leg. From one hind-end page, cut out the dinosaur and the bush. From the other, cut only the dinosaur's full leg.
4. Coat both canvases with a moderate layer of Mod-Podge. If you notice bubbles beginning to form in the paper again, you can repeat the weighing process as soon as the Mod-Podge dries and turns clear.
5. Once it's dry, use the acrylic paints to paint the edges of the canvases with colors that coordinate with the image to make it appear that the picture wraps around the canvas. Use a 1/4" paint brush. Blend colors as necessary to get a good color match. Set aside to dry.
4. Add the layers...
- Fold the bi-colored leaves of the bushes down the middle to add more dimension. Use a little bit of Mod-Podge to glue the trunk of the smallest bush in place over the same image on the canvas. Use foam dots to affix the trunks and solid colored leaves of the other bushes in place over the same images on the canvases.
- Use foam dots to affix the dinosaur cut outs in the appropriate places (it takes a lot of dots! Line the images up well because it may be difficult to reposition once adhered to the foam dots).
- Use another layer of dots to apply the cut-out legs on top of the image you just stuck in place.
Optional: You can apply some Diamond Glaze to the sun and a dab to the dinosaur's eye to add an extra special touch.
