Glittering Halloween Centerpieces

Glittering Halloween Centerpieces - pumpkinsMaterials Needed:
Paper Maché forms
Acrylic Paint (color of choice)
Paint brushes
Thin craft glue
- (Elmer's Glue or Mod Podge)
Glitter
Acrylic spray sealer
12 x 12 cardstock (any color)

Tip:
We chose to use paint and glitter in coordinating colors, but you can achieve an interesting effect by using contrasting colors too.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Cover your workspace with newspaper or a paper bag. This can get a little bit messy! Make sure that you have all of your supplies within easy reach and that you have removed any seals from your products so that you're all ready to go.

Paper Mache forms2. Paint the paper maché piece with acrylic paint. If you are going to add details in multiple colors (similar to our witch's hat) you may want to draw out your design in pencil first, and you will need small paint brushes to paint small details. If you are painting your piece all one color (e.g.: an orange pumpkin) you can use a larger brush. If you opt to paint the inside of the piece, you should paint the outside first because you may need to hold it by putting your hand inside. Once the outside is dry, you can paint the inside. Let dry completely.

3. Hold the dry painted piece over the cardstock for this step. This is to catch excess glitter so that you can put it back in the tube! You may also want to pour some glue into a paper cup or plate so that you don't have to worry about getting glitter in your glue bottle. Use a paintbrush to apply thin craft glue to the painted piece. Sprinkle glitter onto the wet glue and tap to shake off the excess. It is best to apply the glue to small sections at a time so that the glue doesn't dry before you can add the glitter. If you are using multiple colors of glitter, you should only work with one color at a time. Glue and glitter any part of your piece that is to be your first color, pour the excess glitter back into the jar, then repeat the process with the next color (so your glitters don't get mixed up). If a little bit of glitter gets sprinkled in the wrong spot, you can brush it away with a dry paintbrush provided that the glitter isn't sticking to any glue. * It is best to forgo glittering the bottom of your piece. It is extremely messy and no one will see it anyway.

4. You should apply an acrylic spray sealer to the whole piece once the glue/glitter has dried. This will minimize (but not eliminate) the potential for the glitter to get brushed off. It is best to do this step outside or in a well-ventilated space. Follow the instructions on the can of sealer. (We chose a gloss sealer so that if there were any spots where the glitter didn't stick, it would still look shiny.)

NOTE: DO NOT place candles in these pieces. However, a battery powered tea light is recommended.
