Not sure how to choose the right frame, mat, or glass? Here is a simple guide to help you design the perfect custom frame.
Custom Framing Design Made Simple
Custom framing design can feel overwhelming at first. There are many choices to make, from frame styles to matting and glass. However, with the right guidance, the process becomes simple and even enjoyable.
At our 2 Frame Shops in Bonney Lake and Monroe, WA, we help you create a design that truly fits your piece. Whether it is artwork, a photo, or a keepsake, every detail matters.
All photos and projects featured in this blog post were created by our Frame Shop team at our Monroe location.
Choosing the Right Frame Style
The Frame Supports the Story
The frame should reflect the essence of your piece. You would not put a modern, sleek frame on a historical photo any more than you would put a document frame on a concert poster. Each piece deserves a frame that supports its story.
At our Monroe location, our sample wall is organized by style and collection. You can easily explore options ranging from ornate to metallic modern, as well as classic, rustic, and natural wood frames.
Our Skilled Designers Will Guide You
We carry over 2,500 frame options in our Monroe store and over 4,000 at our Bonney Lake store. However, you do not have to sort through them alone.
Our designers guide you through the process step by step. First, we help narrow down styles that suit your piece. Then we walk you through the best options within that category, so you can confidently choose a frame that feels just right.

Should You Add a Mat?
When Matting Enhances Your Piece
Matting is one of the most effective tools in custom framing design. It adds space around your artwork, which helps it feel open and balanced.
In addition, mats can highlight colors and textures within the piece. Sometimes, creative mat designs can even add a playful or artistic touch.
When Matting Is Not the Right Choice
With that said, mats are not always appropriate. For example, you never want to put mats on an oil painting. Oil paintings cannot have glass over them, but mats require glass to protect them, so it’s best to leave mats out.
Other pieces simply look better without added layers. In these cases, a clean and simple design often works best.
Small Details That Make a Big Difference
Even small choices can impact the final look. The way a mat is cut, such as standard bevel or reverse bevel, can subtly change the presentation.
If you love the space that mats provide but have a canvas, there are options. A stacked frame or fabric liner can create a similar effect without using mats.
Choosing the Best Glass
Protecting Your Artwork
Glass plays an important role in preserving your piece. We recommend 99 percent UV protective glass for most items. Even indoor lighting can cause fading over time. From there, you can decide if you want anti glare or reflection control.
When to Use Acrylic Instead
For larger pieces or busy spaces, acrylic is a great alternative. It is lightweight and shatter resistant, which makes it safer for homes with kids or pets.
At the same time, it still offers a clear and polished look similar to glass.
Framing 3D Objects and Keepsakes
Shadow Boxes That Tell a Story
Not everything fits into a traditional frame. That is where shadow boxes come in.
We can frame items like jerseys, wedding dresses, sports memorabilia, and collectibles. These pieces are carefully arranged to create a display that feels both meaningful and visually balanced.

Archival and Reversible Methods
If preservation is important, we offer fully archival techniques. Items can be mounted without adhesives, using methods like hand sewing or custom supports. As a result, your piece remains protected for years to come.
